The arrival of summer every year also marks the arrival of one of my absolute favorite foods: the watermelon. No summer barbecue is complete without slices of this juicy and delicious melon to pass around.
But in all my years of eating watermelon, I had no idea that it was actually benefiting my health at the same time!
Just as there are health benefits to drinking lemon water, there are a surprising number of ways that watermelon is good for you as well. I always knew that it was a good source of hydration, but I never expected it to be good for improving my kidney health and lowering my blood pressure!
Scroll through below for an exclusive list of the nine health benefits of eating a slice of watermelon every day. Now I just have nine more excuses to enjoy this sweet summer favorite.
Are you a fan of watermelon? Will you be adding a little more watermelon to your summer diet? Let us know in the comments!

Why Watermelon?

Why Watermelon?
Watermelon has long been known as a source of all-important nutrients.
Nutrients like lycopene, vitamin A, citrulline, and vitamin C are all present in this delicious fruit, and are likely having a positive overall effect on your body.
Keep scrolling below to see exactly how watermelon can benefit your health!

Benefit #1: Improves Skin

Benefit #1: Improves Skin
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
If you feel like you are in a constant struggle with your own skin, or if you are just looking to capture a little extra glow, try adding more watermelon to your diet.
According to the experts at Curejoy.com, the vitamin A in watermelon helps promote body tissue growth, leading to a fresh, moisturized look all over.

Benefit #2: Promotes Heart Health

Benefit #2: Promotes Heart Health
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Anyone who suffers from heart troubles or experiences chest pain in any way should definitely seek out medical attention right away.
But according to Organic Facts, the lycopene in watermelon “improves cardiac functions.”
Even more than that, the “vitamin C, carotenoids, and potassium help to reduce cholesterol and keep your heart safe from a variety of dangerous conditions.”

Benefit #3: Aids Kidney Health

Benefit #3: Aids Kidney Health
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Passing a kidney stone can be one of the most painful experiences out there, so it is probably in everyone’s best interest to keep the kidneys happy and healthy.
Livelovefruit.com writes that watermelon increases your urine flow without putting extra stress on your kidneys.
Watermelon “eases strain on the kidneys while getting rid of excess fluids.”

Benefit #4: Improves Eyesight

Benefit #4: Improves Eyesight

Adding more watermelon to your diet can also help with your overall eyesight and eye health.
The vitamin A from watermelon can help “protect against age-related macular degeneration as well as prevent night blindness,” according to Livelovefruit.com.

Benefit #5: Supports Bone Health

Benefit #5: Supports Bone Health
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
The health of our bones is extremely important, particularly as we get older.
Fortunately, watermelon contains lycopene and potassium, which can make bones and joints stronger, helping to lower the risk of injury or bone deterioration.

Benefit #6: Lowers Blood Pressure

Benefit #6: Lowers Blood Pressure
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Many people are trying to lower their blood pressure through diet and exercise, but watermelon should definitely be included in these efforts.
According to Organic Facts, “The good amount of potassium and magnesium that is present in watermelons is very beneficial in bringing down blood pressure.”

Benefit #7: Relieves Muscle Soreness

Benefit #7: Relieves Muscle Soreness

Watermelon is also great at fighting inflammation and reducing soreness in the muscles.
Dr. Joseph Mercola cites a study where subjects who drank “watermelon juice prior to their workouts had reduced muscle soreness 24 hours later, compared to those who drank a placebo.”
But because of the high fructose in watermelon juice, Dr. Mercola also writes, “It may be better to eat the entire fruit.”

Benefit #8: Fights Asthma

Benefit #8: Fights Asthma
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Those with asthma know that it is no picnic, but watermelon might actually be able to help out a bit.
The experts at Medical News Today write that consuming high amounts of vitamin C in watermelon can help lower “the risks for developing asthma.”
And for those who already suffer, the nutrients contained within can help improve your overall lung health.

Benefit #9: Fights Prostate Cancer

Benefit #9: Fights Prostate Cancer
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
While watermelon certainly should not be used to battle cancer on its own, it does contain specific cancer-fighting nutrients.
As posted on Live Science: “Watermelons may be helpful in reducing the risk of cancer through their antioxidant properties.
“Lycopene in particular has been linked to reducing prostate cancer… according to the National Cancer Institute.”
For those who already eat plenty of watermelon, all of these benefits will come as welcome news. But for those who don’t, it may just be time to add a delicious slice into your daily diet!
Do you plan to eat a little extra watermelon this summer in order to reap the health benefits? Let us know in the comments.

This awesome story comes to us from our friends atAOL.com.
This Melbourne mom is giving a new definition to playing with food. In an effort to get her 3 year old to eat smart, Laleh Mohmedi took to her own imagination.
Her incredible plates feature all types of images, from Uncle Sam, to Michael Jackson, to the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.
The results are magical. Combining items like pita, blueberries, celery and corn, Laleh brings her food to life. Her detailed illustrations are posted on her popular Instagram, where hopefully she can inspire other parents to get creative with healthy eating.
Laleh’s healthy lifestyle was always something she prided herself on. She explained to ABC News, “I have always been a strong advocate in healthy organic eating for children.”
One day, despite her lack of artistic background, she turned her toddler’s pancakes into a lion. He loved it, and her creations grew. “Jacob tells me which character he would like for me to make, be it from a book, a movie or something that has caught his eye that day,” she continued to ABC News.
Check out some of Laleh’s masterpieces below and follow her Instagram for tons of creative healthy snack ideas!
Lots of people have a complicated relationship with pickles.
Tangy and salty, with varying levels of sugar, spice, and sourness — not everyone is a fan. They’re what you might call an acquired taste.
Of course, for those of us who do love them, we can’t stop singing their praises.
We swear by them as an effective way of waking up the senses, we pop them in Bloody Marys, we even deep-fry them and serve ‘em up as a snack! In the pro-pickle camp, we’re pretty keen on showing the world why briny, flavorful pickles are the best.
Of course, up until now, most of the arguments have been about food and taste. Now, however, we have a brand-new tactic: pickle juice!
Most of us throw out our pickle juice once we finish the jar, even those of us who love the taste. As it turns out, that’s a huge waste of money; plain old pickle juice has tons of hidden benefits that we should all be taking advantage of.
Check out the gallery below to learn a few of the secret skills your pickle juice is hiding!

Pickle Juice 101

Pickle Juice 101

What exactly is pickle juice?
The ingredients in pickle juice vary depending on recipe, but most blends include salt, sugar, vinegar, garlic, and onion.
Other spices that might be added include celery seed, dill, cloves, and turmeric, among others.
The purpose of pickling is to preserve fresh vegetables after harvest, because the compounds in the brine will kill off the bacteria that makes fresh food rot.
People pickle everything from the classic cucumber to more surprising ingredients like watermelon rinds and hard-boiled eggs.
But now, people are finally examining pickle juice beyond its preservation properties: its surprising alternative benefits!

Pickle Juice Benefit #1: Eases Heartburn

Pickle Juice Benefit #1: Eases Heartburn
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Heartburn is an uncomfortable, fiery sensation that most people experience after overindulging, or eating something extra spicy or acidic.
You might think pickle juice would only make this problem worse, but a sip of brine is actually a reliable fix for heartburn.
Surprisingly, vinegar, which is highly acidic, seems to be the ingredient that does the trick.
According to RefluxMD, science is still working out this puzzle, but it may be that the vinegar in the juice encourages your stomach to produce more natural antacids.
This helps to balance out the acidity working its way through your system.

Pickle Juice Benefit #3: Relaxes Muscles

Pickle Juice Benefit #3: Relaxes Muscles
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
If you’re someone who works out or gets muscle cramps pretty regularly, you may have heard the term “electrolytes” thrown around.
Electrolytes, micronutrients that help keep our synapses firing, get lost when we sweat or otherwise lose water.
Without them, our muscles cramp up and stop responding as well.
Fortunately, pickle juice is packed with electrolytes like sodium and potassium, so diluting a few spoonfuls into some water can recharge your body the same way a sports drink might, and, as described in a New York Times article, will stop cramping in its tracks.

Pickle Juice Benefit #4: Helps Sore Throat

Pickle Juice Benefit #4: Helps Sore Throat
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
We all get sore throats from time to time, and they can be a real hassle.
As long as it’s just a sore throat, and not something more serious, there are a couple of simple home remedies.
A warm saltwater rinse is often recommended to kill germs and balance pH levels.
Instead, consider warming some diluted pickle juice to gargle, and reap the additional balancing effects of the vinegar in the juice.

Pickle Juice Benefit #5: Cleans Copper Pans

Pickle Juice Benefit #5: Cleans Copper Pans
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
If you cook with copper-bottomed pans, you may despair of ever getting them back to their shiny, new-penny glory.
Well, never fear, that blackened char and dull color that copper pots acquire over time will disappear in no time with a little elbow grease and pickle juice.
The acetic acid in vinegar cuts through the gunk, and the salt and acid react with the greenish oxidization to brighten up your cookware in a flash.

Pickle Juice Benefit #6: Fertilizes Plants

Pickle Juice Benefit #6: Fertilizes Plants

With summer just around the corner, most weekend gardeners are getting their veggie patches and flower beds into fighting shape.
But did you know that the secret ingredient to an extra-green thumb might be a jar of green pickle juice?
For plants that like acidic soil, like hydrangeas and rhododendrons, pickle juice can provide a much-needed boost to help support happy plants.
Just make sure to test your soil and research the plant before you start pouring pickle juice on it!

Pickle Juice Benefit #7: Adds Flavor

Pickle Juice Benefit #7: Adds Flavor

You might be disappointed when you finish up a jar of pickles, until you realize what you can do next!
Go through your fridge and hunt down any stray veggies that need to be used up.
Carrots that are drying out, leftover broccoli, and red onions can all be submerged in leftover pickle juice overnight.
When you test the veggies the next day, you’ll have some fresh quick-pickles with a tangy zip all their own!
If you love the idea of reusing your pickle juice, make sure to SHARE these helpful household tips with your friends!
When it comes to stocking my medicine cabinet, I like to stick with the basics. The older I get, the less interest I have in expensive, complicated beauty products that only have one function.
Why should I spend money on a million lotions and potions when I can get the same effects from just a handful of simple products intended for multiple purposes?
That’s why, lately, I’m ditching the piles of cosmetics in my life, and switching to just a few medicine cabinet staples that are endlessly useful, like coconut oil for cleaning teeth and banishing wrinkles!
The latest item to join my carefully curated collection is an ordinary bottle of witch hazel extract, which is a cheap and effective way to treat a whole variety of run-of-the-mill ailments and blemishes.
Scroll through the gallery below to learn more about this all-natural tonic, and what it can do for your skin, body, and overall health!

What Is Witch Hazel Extract?

What Is Witch Hazel Extract?
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
Witch hazel is a flowering shrub with pretty yellow flowers that crop up in lots of gardens.
The clear liquid you buy at the pharmacy is actually the extract, which is made from the bark and leaves of the shrub.
It’s an astringent that is rich in tannins, which means it encourages the skin to contract, helping with a variety of simple medical and beauty needs.
But, witch hazel can help more than just your skin. Scroll through its many amazing uses below, then let us know in the comments how you use witch hazel!

Use #1: Dandruff

Use #1: Dandruff
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
Dandruff is an itchy, unsightly condition in which you get flaking of the skin on your scalp.
Depending on your hair type and dandruff, witch hazel could be the perfect way to tackle the ailment.
People with dry, brittle hair should avoid witch hazel, which can have drying properties, but if you have oily hair, this is an excellent way to remove excess skin and oil from the hair before shampooing.

Use #2: Messy Makeup

Use #2: Messy Makeup
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
If you wear makeup, you already know that it’s important to remove it all before you head to bed at night.
That can be easier said than done with sticky, resistant makeups like mascara and lipstick.
The astringent properties in witch hazel can grab onto stubborn makeup residue to make sure you’re fresh as a dewdrop for bedtime!

Use #3: Itchy Spots

Use #3: Itchy Spots
Witch hazel, like fellow astringent calamine, can work miracles when it comes to itchy and irritating skin conditions.
If you’re suffering from something like chicken pox or eczema, blending witch hazel with something like aloe may be very soothing and able to provide relief from the itching.
According to Mercola, it should also help encourage sores to close and heal.
With bug bites, it works the same way, but with an added benefit: applying it before you’re bit can discourage blood-thirsty pests.

Use #4: Smudged Glasses

Use #4: Smudged Glasses
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
I was once chewing gum and blew a bubble that popped onto my glasses, and witch hazel was the only thing that worked to get rid of the sticky film.
In addition to more unusual situations, it’s incredibly effective at clearing up everyday smudges without leaving streaks behind.
Soap and ordinary water leave marks behind, and a microfiber cloth doesn’t always cut it — these are situations that call for a splash of witch hazel.

Use #5: Scrapes And Scratches

Use #5: Scrapes And Scratches
Remember getting a skinned knee as a kid and having mom pour something on it that stung? There’s a good chance that was witch hazel.
Witch hazel is often used in conjunction with antiseptics like alcohol to clean minor abrasions.
Despite the initial sting, it can almost instantly relieve the pain of a cut or scrape, and it encourages your skin to contract, which helps slow bleeding, according to WebMD, and jumpstarts the healing process.

Use #6: Tarnished Jewelry

Use #6: Tarnished Jewelry
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
Most of my jewelry is silver and I feel like I’m always dealing with tarnish.
Witch hazel is a great, simple way to touch up your jewelry when it starts to show its wear and tear.
While you should avoid using it on plated jewelry and soft stones like opal, it’s great for solid silver or bronze items that need a little bit of shine.

Use #7: Puffy Eyes

Use #7: Puffy Eyes
Céline Haeberly/Heeral Chhibber for LittleThings
As an astringent, witch hazel is great at causing the skin to contract.
It may sound a bit funny, but this can work wonders for puffy, inflamed eyes after a bad night’s sleep.
The astringent properties will encourage inflammation and swelling to go down, leaving the skin around your eyes smooth and bright!
If you loved learning a bit about what witch hazel can do for you, make sure to SHARE this awesome info with friends and family!
When it comes to health, I think most of us are ready and willing to try solutions that might seem a little, well, out there in other circumstances.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m feeling truly lousy, I’m pretty open to out-of-the-box solutions, from relying on shark cartilage to help improve psoriasis, to healing a bad cold with a whole clove of garlic.
The latest unusual treatment that has us sitting up and taking notice? An unconventional remedy to cure what ails you: bone broth.
Back in the day, most people made their stock for soups and stews out of bones and leftover bits of meat, but that practice has mostly fallen out of favor in an age where we can all just pick up whatever we need at the grocery store.
Now, however, the old-fashioned tradition is picking up new steam as a lifestyle trend incorporated into all sorts of diets, and given credit for myriad fixes to poor health.
Check out a few of our favorite ways to use this unconventional broth below!

What Is Bone Broth?

What Is Bone Broth?
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
Bone broth is a savory soup or stock, not really that different from the broth you can buy in the store.
The difference is that bone broth is made by roasting bones that are rich in marrow, and then simmering them with vegetables to create the flavorful liquid.
For people who find the idea of cooking with bones a bit gross, just remember, this is a long, long tradition.
Back in the day, everyone made their own bone broth, and the flavor is quite a bit like any other kind of stock.

How Do You Prepare It?

How Do You Prepare It?
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
Fortunately, the basic formula for bone broth is pretty simple.
You can use any kind of animal bones for this broth, though beef bones can take longer.
You may roast the bones first, or simply set them simmering.
Use a Crock-Pot to simmer the bones with vegetables and seasonings, if desired.
A good basic recipe can be found here, and you can change and adapt it as desired!

How Do You Take It?

How Do You Take It?
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
How you decide to take bone broth really depends on your own tastes and needs.
Lots of people drink a steaming hot cup every morning, like a cup of coffee.
Others might drink it before every meal, to settle the stomach.
Still, others may drink it only a few times a week.
To figure out which balance is right for you, try drinking it once a day for a week and see how you feel.
After a week, you can adjust your balance accordingly to figure out what makes your body feel best.

Benefit #1: Seals Leaky Gut

Benefit #1: Seals Leaky Gut
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
This one sounds a little bit odd, but bear with us.
One of the best-known benefits of bone broth is to help heal “Leaky Gut Syndrome.”
This little-known ailment has been suggested by doctors as a cause for all sorts of nutritional and digestive problems.
Some wellness experts theorize that the gelatin in bone broth can help shore up the walls of the gut and prevent digestive issues.

Benefit #2: Accentuates Your Beauty

Benefit #2: Accentuates Your Beauty
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
Bone broth may also lead to an even more beautiful you! After all, looking good starts from the inside out.
A nutrient-rich diet packed full of vitamins is a great way to ensure glowing skin, luscious locks, and a general sense of harmony.
Bone broth is loaded with collagen, the awesome protein that some folks pay big bucks for in anti-aging skin and hair treatments.

Benefit #3: Rests You Up

Benefit #3: Rests You Up
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
You’ll sleep like a log with a bellyful of bone broth.
The glycine that you find in bone marrow absorbs into the soup. From there, the glycine helps to soothe the brain at nighttime, promoting a healthier sleep cycle.
As an added bonus, Shape says it may also improve memory!

Benefit #4: Protects Your Joints

Benefit #4: Protects Your Joints
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
If you’re anything like me, your knees, knuckles, and various other joints are starting to give you some trouble.
If your joints give you pain, the answer might be a daily dose of bone broth.
A lot of joint pain is prompted by deteriorating cartilage in your joints, but bone broth can help regenerate the cartilage.
That way, your joints can stay strong and healthy for longer.

Benefit #5: Saves Money

Benefit #5: Saves Money
Tayra Lucero for LittleThings
And perhaps the best benefit of them all? Drinking bone broth will save you money!
For one thing, you’ll never need to buy store-bought stock again.
For another, all your leftover pieces of meat, plus the odds and ends of veggies, can go right into the broth pot, making the most efficient possible use of your groceries!

Diabetes is a serious disease that afflicts millions of people around the world.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in America alone, nearly 30 million people suffer from the condition, which amounts to nearly one in 10 people.
Diabetes can often go undetected, so it is important to know the symptoms in order to get a proper diagnosis. But if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with diabetes, it is even more important to know when a diabetic emergency is occurring!
Scroll through below for an exclusive look at two types of diabetic emergencies: a hypoglycemic emergency (when the person is suffering from low blood sugar levels) and a hyperglycemic emergency (when the person is suffering from high blood sugar levels).
You’ll see exactly what signs to watch out for and how to respond if you suspect someone you know is having a diabetic emergency.
I had no idea about any of these signs, but I’m so glad I know now — it may just make it possible for someone I know to get the care and medical assistance they need!
Are you or someone you know living with diabetes? Let us know in the comments!

Signs Of A Hypoglycemic Attack
Sign #1: Sweating

Signs Of A Hypoglycemic Attack
Sign #1: Sweating
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
One way to know if someone you love is having a diabetic emergency of this type is if you notice that they are sweating profusely.
Diabetes.org lists “sweating, chills, and clamminess” as signs that a hypoglycemic attack may be in the works.

Sign #2: Hunger

Sign #2: Hunger
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Extreme hunger or hunger pains are also an indication that blood sugar levels may be dangerously low.
When observed in conjunction with other hypoglycemia symptoms, Diabetes.org writes that “hunger and nausea” can be strong warning signs that an emergency is occurring.

Sign #3: Rapid Heartbeat

Sign #3: Rapid Heartbeat
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
The entire cardiovascular system can be affected in the case of a hypoglycemic emergency.
WebMD says to be on the lookout for a “pounding heart” or “racing pulse.”
This unusually high heart activity is a key symptom of someone experiencing a serious bout of low blood sugar.

Sign #4: Shakiness Or Weakness

Sign #4: Shakiness Or Weakness
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
A sudden or gradual onset of shakiness or weakness may be indicating that a diabetic emergency is in the works.
According to Healthline, an initial dip in blood sugar can cause shakiness.
But as things progress, “plummeting blood sugar can also cause fainting” or even “muscle tremors.”

Sign #5: Mood Swings

Sign #5: Mood Swings
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
One often shocking sign of a diabetic emergency is an extreme shift in mood or behavior.
According to Diabetes.org, these mood alterations can include “irritability or impatience, confusion including delirium, nervousness or anxiety, anger, stubbornness, or sadness.”

What To Do For A Hypoglycemic Attack

What To Do For A Hypoglycemic Attack
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
After calling for an ambulance, the most important thing to do for someone experiencing a hypoglycemic attack is to get them the glucose (or sugar) their body needs.
There are many ways to deliver this lifesaving sugar.
Diabetes.org recommends giving the person any of the following as quickly as possible: “glucose tablets, a gel tube, 2 tablespoons of raisins, 1/2 cup of juice or regular soda, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 8 ounces of nonfat or 1% milk, hard candies, jellybeans, or gumdrops.”
Their symptoms should begin to subside as their blood sugar returns to normal, but it is important to get them medical attention in the meantime just in case things worsen.

Signs Of A Hyperglycemic Attack
Sign #1: Itchy Skin

Signs Of A Hyperglycemic Attack
Sign #1: Itchy Skin
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Because hyperglycemia symptoms don’t show up until sugar levels are extremely high, it is important to notice and address any emergency signs right away.
Livestrong.com writes, “The person will experience hot and dry skin,” which can be observed through extreme or unexplained itching.

Sign #2: Thirst

Sign #2: Thirst
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
If someone you know suffers from diabetes and can’t seem to get enough to drink, it may be a signal that a hyperglycemic attack is occurring.
According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the “early symptoms of hyperglycemia” is “increased thirst.”

Sign #3: Frequent Urination

Sign #3: Frequent Urination
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
An inordinate number of trips to the bathroom can also be an indication that something is amiss.
The Mayo Clinic lists “frequent urination” as one of the most common signs of a hyperglycemic emergency, which, when recognized early, “can help you treat the condition promptly.”

Sign #4: Blurred Vision

Sign #4: Blurred Vision
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Problems with vision can also be a sign that someone you know may be suffering from a bout of hyperglycemia.
The Mayo Clinic also lists “blurred vision” as a sign that this diabetic emergency may have taken hold, especially when observed in conjunction with other symptoms.

Sign #5: Wounds That Won't Heal

Sign #5: Wounds That Won't Heal
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
Because a hyperglycemic attack can take place over a longer period of time, even a few days, observing that a wound won’t heal could be a sign of a problem.
According to Woundcarecenters.org, “An elevated blood sugar level stiffens the arteries and causes narrowing of the blood vessels,” which can be “risk factors to proper wound healing.”

What To Do For A Hyperglycemic Attack

What To Do For A Hyperglycemic Attack
Morgan Swofford for LittleThings
The most important thing you can do for someone suffering from a hyperglycemic emergency is to get them medical attention as quickly as possible.
Lay the person on the floor on their side, and call 911 right away.
The quicker this person is able to arrive to an emergency room, the sooner their blood sugar can get back to normal.
Knowing when someone is suffering from a diabetic emergency, and knowing how to respond, can help to save their life and get them the medical attention they desperately need.
